“Did you receive
the Holy Spirit
when you
believed?”
Acts 19: 1 - 7
z
The Story:
Acts 19: 1 - 7
§ V1 Apollos goes from Ephesus to Corinth and Paul comes
from Antioch/Syria to Ephesus – they miss each other!
§ Paul meets 12 disciples/students and asks (v2), “Did you
receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
§ The 12 responded, “No, we have not even heard that there
is a Holy Spirit.”
§ V3 Paul asks, “By what baptism were you baptized?” They
responded, “John’s baptism.”
z
§ V4 Paul told them to believe in the One Who came
after John – Jesus
§ V5 They were baptized in the Name of Jesus
§ V6 Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit
came on them and they spoke in tongues and
prophesied
§ V7 There were 12 of them
z
Let’s Look Closer:
§ Paul caught that if they had not heard of the Holy Spirit
then they were not baptized in the Name of the Father,
Son, and Holy Spirit as Jesus commanded (Matt 28:19 –
20)
§ “go and make disciples (obedient followers) of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to
obey everything I have commanded you…and surely,
I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
z
John’s (Jesus’ cousin) Baptism:
§ John is the “last Old Testament” prophet. Luke 1: 17, “He
will go on before the Lord, in the Spirit and power of Elijah…
(he will ) turn the disobedient to the wisdom of
righteousness … (he will) make ready a people prepared for
the Lord.”
§ John’s message was a call to repentance – return to the
practices given by Moses and a message preparing people
for the coming of the Messiah (Jesus).
(These believers were followers of John’s teachings)

Water Baptism = A Physical Proclamation of
Your Obedience to Jesus
§ Romans 6: 3 & 4 “…don’t you know that all of us who were
baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into
death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead
through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
§ 6: 6 “For we know that our old self was crucified with Him
so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that
we should no longer be slaves to sin.”
z
§ 6: 10 & 11 “The death He died, He died to sin once for
all; but the life He lives, He lives to God… count
yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”
§ We are commanded in scriptures by Jesus to:
§ Practice/Participate in Communion = I Corinthians 11
§ Following Jesus’ Example in Water Baptism = Matt 28
z
V5 Upon learning this, the 12 were baptized in the
Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
§ Now…back to Paul’s original question: “Did you receive the
Holy Spirit when you believed?”
§ V6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit
came on them and they spoke in tongues and prophesied –
this is a subsequent experience to salvation
§ This is your prayer language taught in the book of John (7,
14, & 16), Ephesians (5), and Romans (8) – for all believers
